SHS not only avenue for education for JHS leavers – Director

Peki, Feb. 10, GNA – Mrs Olivia Sosu, Volta Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), at the weekend said entrance into a mainline Senior High School was not the only avenue for additional education for junior high school leavers.

She said there were many job related programmes being run at vocational schools, which could be pursued to the university level. Mrs Sosu was reacting to concerns of poor placement procedures to senior high schools raised at the graduation ceremony of the first batch of Diploma in Basic Education trainees of the Peki College of Education. She said parents must be made aware of these other opportunities, which could get a good start in life for their children. Mrs Sosu said the GES was resolving problems related to the computerized system of placement of junior high school leavers and had already found school for those posted to schools said to be too far away from where their parents lived.

She told the 176 graduating students that it was one thing being a “trained teacher and another performing as a trained teacher”. Mr Kofi Sabon Asare, Board Chairman of the College, had faulted the GES for taking too long to assess the computerized placement of junior high school students, complaining that it had led to low enrolment in young and less known schools. He observed that fragmentations in teachers’ labour front would make them unable to speak with a united voice. Mrs Elizabeth Kpatakpa, acting Principal of the College, said the 54-year old teacher training institution, which now had 1,194 students, needed an infrastructure overhaul.

She said the dinning hall was in a deplorable state and the road network on campus needed attention. Mrs Kpatakpa urged the new teachers to bring out their best to prove that the programme was worthwhile. Before the graduation ceremony 180 new students out of 316 who had applied were matriculated. Mrs Kpatakpa told them to behave responsibly; avoiding decisions based on rumours and be analytical to reflect their status as tertiary students.
