Sanitation and women’s health are my focus – Aspirant

The only female contestant in the Nkurakan Electoral Area, in the Yilo Krobo District in the Eastern Region, has said that sanitation and women’s health would be her focus when elected to the Assembly.

Evelyn Teiko Asenih said sanitation continued to be a big challenge in the area despite the institution of the National Sanitation Day programme and, therefore, called for massive support to realise her vision of working to address it.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), on the “Women’s Profile” project, Ms Asenih said the Assembly needed focused and dedicated persons to help develop the area, justifying that she possessed those qualities.

Ms Asenih stated that women were at the centre of sanitation issues because they were mostly traders, explaining that she would also focus on women’s health by rallying all the women in the area to adopt a solution.

She said apart from sanitation and health, the standard of education in the area was nothing to write home about and explained that girls in the area often dropped out of school for no reason to trade.

She, therefore, gave the assurance to collaborate with the community and the school authorities to curb the situation.

She announced that in line with her vision, she had initiated and supported the opening of a National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) office in the area to make it accessible to all, especially women, to reduce the burden of travelling to Somanya for renewals and registration.

Ms Asenih, an educationist, is contesting the seat with two males and has appealed to women to go out and vote for her, saying, “With women’s support, women would get there.”
