Review GETFUND Act – NUGS

Winneba(C/R), Oct.10, GNA – Mr Abubakari Forgor, out-going President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) last week-end called for a review of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) Act to assist private and other government educational institutions. He said some institutions including the Ghana Institute of Journalism, National Film and Television Industry, Institute of Management Studies and Academy of Business Administration were some of the institution that played a major role in education but were not benefiting from the Fund.

Mr. Forgor made the call in an address read on his behalf at the 39th handing over ceremony of the Administration of NUGS to new executives at the University of Education Winneba (UEW). Mr. Samuel Okudgato is the in-coming President. Mr Forgor called on the Government and stakeholders in the educational sector to forge a more sustainable modality on funding of education in the country in order not to deprive some institutions access to the GETFUND. He said measures put in place by the out-going executives to help NUGS achieve most of its aims and objective include securing a seat on the board for the NUGS representative to oversee its smooth implementation of aims and objectives. Others are expansion of NUGS international affiliations to include the Libyan Arab Socialist Jamahirriyya.

Mr Forgor said NUGS had in addition, secured a representative to the UN General Assembly this year, adding” Ghana and Zimbabwe are the first African countries to send students representative to the UN General Assembly.”
