PURC Accountant Sets Himself Ablaze

The Financial Manager of the Public Utilities Regulations Commission (PURC), William Kofi Dadson is dead. And he died willingly. Police sources say on Saturday 2nd November, 2002, Dadson drove into the compound of the PURC dressed in a thick batakari (smock). He was carrying a blanket and a can containing petrol.

Dadson allegedly told the security men that he had gone to retrieve some documents from his office. Later events shows that he locked himself in the office, gathered all documents in his office into a heap, sat on it, covered himself with the blanket, soaked himself with the petrol in the ten litre can and set himself ablaze.

When the office was opened following the emergence of smoke from the room, it was detected that all the documents had been destroyed. He was conveyed to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital but died the following day, Sunday, November 3.

Sources at the PURC disclosed that following an audit report into the finances of the Commission, it was discovered that an amount of ?1.2 billion cedis had been misappropriated. This led to the dismissal of Mr Dadson pending further prosecution in court. To add insult to injury, his spouse sacked him from their Dzowulu residence and at the time of the death, he was living with a friend at Cantonments. Police could however not attribute any reason to the action.
