Prison inmates appeal for review of jury trial

Nsawam, July 11, GNA – Inmates on the death row at Nsawam Medium Security Prison have appealed to Parliamentary Select Committee on Judiciary to review jury trial for high felony cases in the country. They contended that three high court judges should preside over such cases to ensure an objective and legal analyses of cases that jurors lacked.

The inmates made the appeal when members of the committee visited the condemned cell of the prison. They requested for State support especially for legal representation at the Appellate Courts.

Mr Yaw Baah, Member of Parliament for Kumawu and Chairman of the committee, said it was the responsibility of the State to address human rights of the citizenry including those on death roll.

He said the committee would critically consider their requests and include them in any recommended prison reforms.
