Ghanaians call for probe
Ghana appears to be living in dangerous times. On the night of 1st June, 2012 Ghanaians were embarrassed by the sheer incompetence of the National Sports Authority( NSA) to provide floodlights for over eighty three minutes during Ghana’s World Cup Qualifier against Lesotho at the Baba Yara stadium, Kumasi. It was so scary to think that Ghana could have lost the match or replayed it after leading four nil within fifty three minutes.
The huge mess was however overshadowed by the radio announcement that the Regional head of Electricity in Ashanti had been suspended by President Mills. The suspension of the head, conveyed by the director of Communications at the office of the President, Koku Anyidoho, turned out to be a cruel joke, an indictment on the President and an insight into how our Presidency has been devalued.
Anyidoho, speaking on the authority of President Mills, claimed that the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces was very livid about the stadium blackout.
Hours later, he retracted the statement claiming it was rather the decision of senior members of the NDC government to relieve the ECG boss of his post. The Ministries of Energy and Information also followed with denials and disclaimers that the President had ever authorised any such suspension, but is rather demanding a probe into the blackout without castigating Anyidoho Since the exposure, Ghanaians have been wondering who is really in charge, how many of such decisions have been made without retraction, the fate of victims of such reckless statements and the implications on our governance.
Politicians, the clergy, civil society and members of the diplomatic corps are amazed and scandalised by such effrontery at the presidency.
”How can a spokesman arrogate to himself the powers of a President”? was the question a senior police officer asked.
”So who is running Ghana?”, a Reverend Minister asked his congregation, while some members of Parliament, particularly the minority New Patriotic Party(NPP), have called for full scale inquiry and severe sanctions in respect of the infamous “suspension” by “President Koku”. Some members of government, “The Front Page” spoke to, feel so embarrassed.
