President John Dramani Mahama has granted presidential pardons to 863 convicted people under Ghana’s constitutional prerogative of mercy.
The decision was taken in accordance with Article 72(1) of the 1992 Constitution, following consultation with the Council of State, according to a statement from Minister of Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
The pardon forms part of commemorations for Ghana’s 70th Independence Anniversary. The government described the decision as an act of mercy and national reflection marking the milestone in the country’s history.
