The government is seeking additional funding for the National and Regional Houses of Chiefs to help settle chieftaincy disputes more quickly and stop prolonged conflicts from developing into national security concerns.
Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister Mahama Ayariga announced the proposal at the Government Accountability Series at Jubilee House on Monday, October 5.
Mr Ayariga said President John Dramani Mahama had instructed him and the Finance Minister to find extra resources for the traditional institutions. The options under consideration include support through local government financing arrangements.

“The President has directed me and the Finance Minister to explore ways to increase funding allocation to the National and Regional Houses of Chiefs to enhance their capacity to dispose of Chieftaincy disputes expeditiously,” Mr Ayariga said.
He added that the government planned to consider funding for the National and Regional Houses of Chiefs within the Common Fund formula.
The minister said traditional authorities made an important contribution to the effective administration of many Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), making stronger financial support for the institutions necessary.
