Kadjebi, Aug 12 GNA – The police last Sunday managed to quell a clash between supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Kadjebi over voter registration. Two Urvan buses belonging to some individuals and a motorbike of the Non-Formal Education Division were vandalised during the skirmish. No arrest was made.
The clash was said to have erupted when supporters of the NPP in Kadjebi confronted buses full of people alleged to be supporters of the NDC, who came to register that Sunday at the area. The police since Sunday have maintained a strong presence in town to ensure incident free registration exercise.
Mr Kofi Adjei Ntim, Kadjebi District Chief Executive told the Ghana News Agency that, those in the buses were prevented from registering because they were suspected to be aliens in the district. He said the group became incensed and wielding offensive weapons, barricaded the main road to Kadjebi.
Mr Ntim said they attempted to attack his residence but his security guard dispersed them by firing warning shots. He said the group retreated but in an angry mood vandalized two Urvan buses parked at the forecourt of the District Assembly as well as destroyed billboards of the NPP.
Mr Ntim said the District Security Council (DISEC) later met and reviewed the security situation to guard against its re-occurrence. Mr Kofi Adei-Akyeampong, Hohoe Divisional Police Commander, who confirmed the incident, said calm has since returned to Kadjebi. He said there were no reported injuries and assured that the situation was being closely monitored.
