Planned demo over ‘dumsor’ a waste – AGI boss

The Ashanti and Brong Ahafo regional chairman of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) has rubbished an impending demonstration against ‘dumsor’ (erratic power supply) on Independence Day.

According to William Awuku-Ahiadormeh, the action is “wasteful and defeatist” especially when the energy crisis is public knowledge.

A group calling itself Concerned Ghanaians intends going on an anti-Government demonstration over the worsening power situation on March 6, Ghana’s Independence Day anniversary.

The group, in a statement signed by Ofei Dei Goodfellow and Atick Yakubu said its membership is made up of diverse citizens who have come together to “protest against the perennial power outages that continue to bedevil and cripple the country.”

The Energy Ministry has said the situation is due to low level of water in the Akosombo Dam, unreliable gas supply from the West Africa Gas Pipeline in Nigeria to power thermal plants in Ghana among others.

The AGI boss said hitting the streets will not solve the energy crisis.

“You demonstrate when there is a problem that is not known and you are highlighting it… if you demonstrate, the ultimate thing is to give a communiqué and some documents to government… and he comes on air and reads the same speech you went to give, is that a solution,” Awuku-Ahiardormeh told Ultimate FM.

Meanwhile, he has charged the media to focus more on suggestions that can help end the unreliable power supply.
