Participants attend workshop on Domestic Violence Bill

Jasikan, Dec 8, GNA – A one-day legal awareness seminar to sensitise the public and solicit views and suggestions on the Domestic Violence Bill before Parliament was held at Jasikan on Monday.

The seminar, which was attended by a cross-section of people from Jasikan, Kadjebi, Nkwanta, Krachi and Hohoe districts was organised by the Women in Law and Development in Africa (WILDAF).

The objective of the seminar was to commemorate activities marking 16 days of Gender Activism, from November 25 to December 10.

It was set aside by the United Nations to bring to light the effects of gender violence throughout the world and the need to eradicate it. According to Mrs Hilary Gbedemah, Senior Legal Advisor of the Legal Awareness Programme, Ghana joined the commemoration of the 16 days of Gender Activism eight years ago.

She said the awareness and sensitisation programme is part of activities marking the commemoration.

Mrs Gbedemah said it has been realised that a lot of people especially those in the rural areas are not aware of the domestic violence bill.

She said such workshops would help open up the minds of the public to understand the gender issues in the bill and that similar seminars would be organised in Ho and Akatsi before the end of this month.
