Accra, Nov. 2, GNA – Parliament has given approval for Election 2004 to be held on December 7 2004.
This follows the adoption of the Report of the Committee on Subsidiary Legislation on Public Elections (Presidential and Parliamentary Election Date) Instrument, 2004 (C.I.) 48 on Tuesday. The Instrument was laid before Parliament when Mr Edward Doe Adjaho, NDC-Avenor, raised a controversy and questioned why the Electoral Commission (EC) had failed to bring it before the House.
The Constitutional Instrument required 21 sitting days to mature and having regard to the fact that the House was expected to rise within four weeks after re-convening early last month, the MP had called on the EC to bring the CI before the House.
Mr Kosi Kedem, NDC-Hohoe South, said with the passage of the CI “we are now assured that elections would be held on this date”. He urged the EC to ensure that every issue relating to the elections was given maximum attention for a free and fair election.
Both sides of the House expressed appreciation that the controversy had been resolved.
The Majority Leader, Felix Owusu-Adjapong commended Mr Doe Adjaho for his role in ensuring that the CI was brought to the House.
