Parents urged to complement teachers’ efforts

Parents have been urged to complement the efforts of teachers to help promote teaching and learning in the country.

“As stakeholders, you have to help to redeem the fallen standards of education in your jurisdiction”.

Reverend Sister Jacinta Kwakyewa Osei of the Saint John’s Model Junior High School at Ofoase, made the call when she addressed the “Education Week” celebration of the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Preparatory School here in the Akyemansa District.

The week-long activities of the school, established in 2004, with a population of 580, include a route march with brass band, inter-houses quiz, dancing competition, sporting activities, drama display, “Sabbath” school and church service.

Rev. Sis. Osei, who spoke on the topic “the role of parents in education”, urged parents to provide their children with extra learning aids, neat dresses and pay their fees promptly, as a way of investing in their wards education.

She expressed worry about the low standard of education in the area and noted that the moral training of children was fundamentally the responsibility of parents and that they should not leave it all to teachers, else the children “will go wayward”.

She exhorted farmers to regard their children’s education as an investment, by providing their educational needs.

Rev. Osei advised Ghanaians to avoid insults, disrespect for chiefs and political leaders, and must tolerate divergent opinions, to help promote peace.

Elder Nelson Kontor, Proprietor of the school, said in spite of the progress made by the school, it was confronted with challenges which demanded urgent attention and called for assistance from the Education Ministry and other benevolent organization.

Mr K Gyamerah, headteacher, said the school was faced with financial problems, which had hindered the fencing of the school’s compound as well as the acquisition of computers and a school bus.
