Paga gets Ebola Centre

A two-room Ebola centre, has been opened at the Paga Border in the Kassena-Nankana West District in the Upper East Region.

The Centre is to serve as an emergency holding point of suspected Ebola cases for rapid response.

The Centre which cost GH¢ 20,000, was established by the Kassena-Nankana West District Assembly (KNWDA), as part of efforts to control the outbreak ofEbola at the ground crossing point at the Paga border, and to prevent any entry of the disease into the region.

Mr James Zuuga Tiigah, the Upper East Regional Minister who commissioned the facility, congratulated the District Assembly, and said it was an important milestone in the collective efforts of the country in fighting the menace.

The Regional Minister appreciated the inclusive efforts of development partners, and said fighting the menace simultaneously challenged government to provide the necessary logistics to arrest the menace, and to keep the people safe.

He thanked the traditional authority for providing land for the purpose, and called for assistance in the provision of lands for such development purposes.

He congratulated the Assembly and actors at the frontiers of the ground crossings, for their collaborative efforts and timely response, and urged all municipal and district assemblies close to borders, to emulate the efforts of the KNWD.

Mr Francis Nyamekye, the Regional Port Health Coordinator in-charge of the Paga port, thanked the Assembly for providing the building as the centre had been operating in a tent.

He called for more support in terms of protective equipment, indicating that gloves, masks and sanitary equipment received earlier had run out.

He also called for vehicular support for his outfit, to help in monitoring the entry points and unapproved routes, which recalcitrant travellers plied, to curtail any entry of the disease.

The Upper East Region has seven ground crossings to Togo and Burkina Faso, which include Mognori, Misiga and Kolungugu in the Bawku Municipality, Namoo in Bongo District, Widana in Zebilla in the Bawku West District and Paga.
