Shama (W/R), July 11, GNA 97 Over 200 people of the Shama District of the Western Region were at the weekend affected by torrential rains that destroyed buildings, schools and churches among other things.
The rain that lasted for over six hours made the Anankor River that passes through Inchaban to overflow its banks and flooded people’s homes destroying properties worth millions of Ghana cedis.
Some household items destroyed included fridges, television sets, DVDs, radio sets, furniture and carpets. Some residents were trapped in their rooms and were rescued by the officials of the Ghana National Fire Service.
Mr Enoch Kojo Appiah, District Chief Executive for Shama, and some officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) visited some of the affected persons on Monday to assess the extent of damage caused by the flood.
The DCE expressed concern about indiscriminate building in water ways and dumping of refuse in drains and unauthorized places in the community.
He said the assembly would scrutinize the building permits issued to homeowners and those who did not receive permit before building would be dealt with in accordance with the laws guiding estate development.
The District NADMO Coordinator, Mr Paul Awortwe, said affected residents were provided temporal accommodation at a church building and supplied with mattresses, polymers and blankets.
He, therefore, appealed to the government to support them with more relief items in order to assist those in need.
