Ghana head coach Otto Addo has voiced his disappointment in the Black Stars’ performance following their unexpected 1-1 draw against Chad in Thursday’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
The result marks a major setback for Ghana, who had hoped to tighten their grip on Group I. Jordan Ayew gave the visitors a deserved lead, but a late equaliser from Ecua Celestin, give Chad a first point of the campaign after six straight losses.
Speaking candidly after the match, Addo didn’t hide his frustration.
“At the end, I can’t say we played excellent, or we played well, because the result is everything,” Addo said.
“If we had scored two or three goals, we would be talking differently. But, again, respect to Chad for the good defending. I don’t know how many corners we had, a lot and we did nothing with them. We had a lot of shots, a lot of possession, and normally, we have to win this game.”
Addo acknowledged his side’s lack of sharpness in front of goal and poor decision-making in key moments.
“This is, at the end, surely not good enough, and we have to improve, especially on our execution.”
Despite the draw, Ghana remain top of Group I with 16 points after seven matches, holding a three-point lead over second-placed Madagascar, and four ahead of Mali.
The Black Stars now face a quick turnaround as they prepare for a crucial home fixture against Mali on Monday (8 September) at the Accra Sports Stadium, a match that could significantly shape their World Cup qualifying hopes.
