Takoradi, Aug. 17, GNA – Nana Addo-Dankwah Akufo-Addo, Flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), says the Party will continue to strengthen multi-ethnic and multi-religious unity in the country. He said the selection of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, as his running mate was the starting point of the NPP’s agenda to make Ghana prosperous. Nana Akufo-Addo said this at a mammoth rally on Sunday to climax the Party’s 16th Delegate’s congress. It was on the theme” “we are moving forward”.
He said the NPP comprised “multi-groups of people” who were pooling their expertise and skills for the development of the nation. Nana Akufo-Addo said though Dr. Bawumia is a Moslem from Northern Ghana, his partnership with him, a Christian from the South, aims at uniting the North and the South for the best of Ghana.
He said Dr. Bawumia was an achiever and had within the last seven years moved to the position of second Deputy Governor of Bank of Ghana.
“We will work together to produce a resounding victory in the forthcoming elections to begin the second phase of the NPP’s development of the nation.”
Nana Akufo-Addo said Dr. Bawumia would help transform the NPP, as well as the economy.
Dr Kwame Addo-Kufuor, Interior Minister, said Dr Bawumia had been with the Party since the NPP assumed office in 2000 and that he has contributed immensely to its development.
He said Dr. Bawumia had negotiated several loans and grants and other benefits from the World Bank for the country.
He was optimistic that NPP would win the election this year and cautioned supporters of the Party to avoid acts that could lead to violence.
“There should not be impersonation during the election,” he cautioned, and advised that unity within the NPP must be promoted by all.
He reassured that Ghana would not experience any electoral upheavals and that government would do all in its power to ensure a peace and unity after the elections.
Mrs Gladys Asmah, MP for Takoradi; Papa Owusu Ankomah, MP for Sekondi; Mrs Angelina Baiden-Amissah, MP for Shama; Madam Grace Omaboe alias Maame Dokono, television host of “abrabo mu nsem”, and Nana Kwame Ampadu a popular musician were among speakers at the rally.
They urged the electorate to return NPP to power to enable it to continue its development programmes.
