NPP chairman, 6 others in court over Asawase killing

The Asawase Constituency chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Isaac Brenya, and six others, who have been arrested for the murder of a party member, Sadiq Abubakar Mohammed, are due to appear before the Kumasi Magistrate court Tuesday afternoon.

The 37-year-old was stabbed to death last Friday by unknown assailants at the Asawase constituency office of the party, for allegedly threatening to beat up the Constituency Chairman who is believed to have made unpleasant comments about the flagbearer of the party, Nana Akuffo-Addo.

The seven suspects are expected to testify to their knowledge and involvement in the act.

President John Mahama has condemned the infighting within the main opposition party.

He said he has ordered the Police to pursue the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

“I have asked the police to investigate those who did it and bring it to book. There is no place in our politics for this kind of violence. No amount of political power is worth the drop of blood of any single Ghanaian”. Mahama told a gathering in the Upper West region.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Wontumi) has also assured the police the party would activate its internal investigations machinery to help solve the crime.
