Nine perish in deadly accident at Akatsi

Nine persons are reported dead after a passenger bus they were traveling on from Abidjan in Cote D’Ivoire crashed into a bridge at Akatsi in the Volta region.

The dead have not been identified.

According to the police, the bus was carrying a total of 68 passengers many of whom were traders conveying their goods to Togo to sell. The surviving passengers, who sustained serious injuries, have been rushed to various hospitals for medical care.

The Chief Fire Officer for Akatsi, Francis Tettey who briefed Citi News about the incident which occurred on the morning of Tuesday July 19, 2011, said the driver of the vehicle escaped the accident unhurt.

However, some victims either lost their heads, a leg or hand. “It’s very very sad. If you see the victims, you will see that human beings we are nothing,” he remarked.
