Nigeria’s football administration has scored a significant continental win as Ibrahim Musa Gusau has been elected the new President of the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B. He takes over from Ghana’s Kurt Okraku, who previously held the position.
Gusau, who is also the President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), is widely recognized for his deep understanding of football governance and his commitment to strengthening the sport across the sub-region. His appointment signals a new chapter for WAFU Zone B, which comprises countries such as Ghana, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Benin, Niger, and Togo.
The transition of leadership comes at a time when West African football is undergoing major reforms aimed at improving competitiveness, youth development, and infrastructure. Gusau is expected to bring fresh energy and strategic vision to the role, leveraging his experience to further unify the region and elevate the standard of football.
Outgoing President Kurt Okraku leaves behind a legacy of structural reforms and youth-focused initiatives. His tenure saw an increase in regional tournaments and efforts to promote women’s football within the zone.
With Gusau at the helm, stakeholders are optimistic about the future of West African football, particularly as the region continues to produce some of the continent’s brightest talents and strongest national teams.
