NGO signs MOU with Gushegu District to improve education

The Gushegu District Assembly in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service and the National Youth Employment Programme in the district has entered into a Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) with the Net Organization for Youth Empowerment and Development (NOYED-Ghana), an NGO, to support quality education.

Under the MOU, the District Assembly will commit GH¢ 10, 000 budgetary allocations annually over a three-year period towards supporting GES to organize regular in-service training for the Community Education Teaching Assistants (CETA) of the NYEP.

The District Chief Executive, Mr. Fuseini Alhassan who signed on behalf of the district, deplored the poor performance of students in the area and assured that the district would not hesitate to collaborate with any institution that was striving to change the situation.

He said education was the key to success and bedrock of development and that the district had therefore prioritized education to meet the millennium development goals targets of achieving universal basic education.

Mr. Alhassan appealed to the GES to regularly monitor and strictly supervise all teachers including the CETA teachers.

Mr. Alhassan Abdulai Iddi, Executive Director of NOYED-Ghana noted that agreement was in the right direction stressing that CETA employees under the NYEP were doing tremendously well in the classroom.

He said most of the teachers in the district were the NYEP teachers who could be supported to become professional teachers.

Mr. Iddi suggested that the NYEP at the regional and national levels could assist its employees under the teaching model to enroll in the Untrained Teacher Diploma in Basic Education programme.

He said laying off people on the programme without any meaningful jobs and skills was not the best, adding that those persons could be assisted to improve their lives as well as the society if they were sponsored to further their education.**
