NDC disagrees with Police decision

Accra, March 4, GNA- The National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Sunday said it did not share the position of the Police Service in legally restraining the Committee for Joint Action (CJA) from exercising its democratic rights to organise a procession to mark the Ghana@50 celebrations the way it deemed fit.

“We are convinced that the hallmark of a functional and vibrant constitutional democracy is the peaceful political activism and dissent that characterise it”, Dr Kwabena Adjei, Chairman of the party told a news conference in Accra to declaring that the NDC would participate in the March 6 Anniversary Parade at the Independence Square.

He said the party was of the opinion that apart from the Anniversary parade that was open to all, most of the official activities lined up for the celebrations was elitist and exclusive in nature, thus limiting the participation of the overwhelming majority of Ghanaians. The NDC Party Chairman said that for the police to criminalize the intended CJA procession was 93a slap in the face”.

“We believe that peaceful processions and similar parallel celebrations enable us to demonstrate our political pluralism and maturity as well as elaborate our collective national consciousness”, he said.

Dr Adjei thus warned that in the event that the CJA embarked on its planned procession, the security agencies should desist from wreaking untoward violence on their members, supporters and sympathisers.
