NDC activist’s car set ablaze

A Benz car, belonging to the deputy Northern Regional Organiser of the NDC, Alhaji Ayana, was at the weekend set ablaze by an unidentified group of persons. Ayana who was driving the car at the moment however escaped unhurt.

According to a police source, the incident occurred at about 10:30 p.m. in Tamale.

The source said, when Ayana got to a distance of about 300 metres to his home at Jisonayili, a suburb of Tamale, he was stopped by three young men who had disguised themselves.

The police said one of the men immediately engaged Ayana in a scuffle whiles the rest set the car on fire. Ayana had to give a warning shot to enable him escape. The charred car is parked at the police station.

Although Ayana could not identify the assailants, he led the police to arrest one suspect, Mutari Issahaku whom he claimed is one of the three persons who prior to the incident had confronted and warned that, he would be dealt with severely in the event of an NPP victory.

Another suspect, Mustapha Issahaku, who remarked at the scene of the arson that Ayana should have been burnt with his car is also in police custody helping in investigations. They are both in their 30s.

A group of young men who marched to the police station later in the morning to demand for the release of the suspects nearly marred the peaceful celebration by supporters of the NPP and its allies. The police had to fire warning shots to disperse the advancing crowd, resulting in a number of injuries.
