The Nkoranza South Municipal Directorate of the National Commission of Civic Education (NCCE) has launched one-week educational programme in 20 selected schools and communities on the relevance of the celebration of Citizenship Day.
The Day is to commemorate Ghana’s return to democratic rule and for people to feel proud in decision-making in the country’s development.
In connection with the celebration, the Directorate has engaged the services of some prominent personalities from the Municipality, who had volunteered to visit the schools, to interact with the students and educate them on their civic rights and responsibilities.
The volunteers include teachers, ministers of the Gospel, health workers, traditional rulers, public servants and the self-employed.
Mr Ishak Dakurah, Nkoranza South Municipal Director of NCCE, launching the programme, emphasized that the country’s development depended on the type of the citizenry, whether good, law abiding or disciplined.
However, he said if the citizenry would be lawless, refuse to respect people in authority and be enslaved with social vices, then the fortunes of the country would decline.
Mr Dakurah, therefore, called on the youth to be self-disciplined and live by the norms of the society in order to become responsible citizens to lead the country in the future.
He pointed out that the NCCE was facing challenges including lack of means of transport, inadequate financial and logistics support and appealed to well-meaning Ghanaians to consider their plight and assist them.
Mr Dakurah urged beneficiary schools and communities to plant trees to serve as symbolic species for continuing students to appreciate the relevance of the Day.
Ms Agartha Osei, Nkoranza South Municipal Girls Education Officer, stressed the need for girls to take their education serious, and compete with the boys to reach higher levels in order to become responsible mothers for their communities in future.
She appealed to teachers and parents to work together and offer the necessary counseling to students to lead decent lives as responsible citizens.
Ms Osei cautioned the youth against pre-marital sex because such negative practices could make them become drop-outs from school.
