National service personnel threaten hunger strike

National Service personnel within the Sunyani Municipality have hinted of a hunger strike within a week if the government does not intervene to help them with seed capital to start their own businesses after National Service.

President of the Sunyani Municipal branch of the National Service Persons Association (NASPA), Kwaku Yamoah, compared students of Universities and Polytechnics to Nursing and teacher trainees, and came to the conclusion that persons from these universities and polytechnics are being treated unfairly, especially since they are not assured of jobs after their national service.

He lamented that with just three months to end their national service tenure, none of the personnel was assured of being maintained at their current posts.

He says they are being trained to become entrepreneurs and hence need to be supported by the government to stand and create jobs. Kwaku Yamoah opined that the monies required to support such a project will not be significantly different from what is currently spent on so called “capacity building programmes”.

He believes National Service Personnel in the country have been taken for granted for a long time and adds that the time has come for them to voice out. He called on colleague service personnel in other regions to come out strongly on issues affecting National Service Personnel in Ghana.
