Ghana Eyes DSTV Price Cut as Sam George Demands Fairer Rates

Ghanaian households could soon see a reduction in DSTV subscription fees as the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Sam George, takes a firm stand in negotiations with the satellite broadcaster.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, July 3, 2025, the Minister announced plans to meet with both the Ghanaian and South African management teams of DSTV in what he described as a “critical conversation” aimed at securing more affordable subscription rates for Ghanaians.

“We will use the power of the state to protect the citizens of the state,” Mr. George declared. “I am clear in my mind that the meeting will not come to an end without an agreed reduction in the price.”

The minister’s remarks come amid growing public frustration over high DSTV costs, especially as consumers grapple with broader economic pressures. According to Mr. George, the government’s aim is to ensure digital service providers price their offerings in line with Ghana’s economic realities.

He dismissed DSTV’s recent promotional move which offered subscribers automatic upgrades to higher packages, as insufficient. “We are grateful,” he said, “but that is not what we want. We want a price reduction.”

The negotiations form part of the government’s broader strategy to tackle the rising cost of living by addressing pricing practices in the telecommunications and digital services sectors.

Consumer advocacy groups have welcomed the development, calling it a bold step towards greater pricing fairness in Ghana’s digital market.

DSTV, a subsidiary of South Africa’s MultiChoice Group, is yet to issue an official response, but the company is expected to participate in the upcoming talks.

As anticipation builds, many Ghanaians are hoping the minister’s tough stance will finally deliver the relief long sought by subscribers across the country.
