National Security operatives have taken control of the Akom Axel Load Station in the Afigya Kwabre North District following allegations of widespread corruption and misappropriation of public funds.
The move comes after intelligence suggested that the station, which is meant to monitor and record heavy vehicle weights to protect roads and generate government revenue, had become a hub for illegal personal enrichment.
Alhaji Abubakar Nje, Deputy Regional Security Coordinator, confirmed the intervention in an interview with Adom News, citing evidence of serious revenue losses.
“We received reports that some officials were allowing trucks to pass through without being weighed and were pocketing the fees,” he said. “We’ve taken over the station temporarily to restore order and ensure the state gets what it’s due.”
Alhaji Nje revealed that during a spot check on 4 June, nine vehicles were arrested for bypassing procedures. Just five days later, during a personal inspection, only one vehicle had been properly recorded, a sign, he said, of the scale of the problem.
The revelations have sparked political and public outrage. Kwame Yallo, the NDC Organiser for the Afigya Kwabre North constituency, accused members of his own party of exploiting the system merely six months into a new local administration.
“I raised concerns, and someone offered me one car every week just to stay silent,” Yallo claimed, calling for immediate intervention by the government and highway authorities.
He added that beyond the financial losses, unregulated trucks were damaging roads meant to be protected by the axle-load checks. “The roads are being destroyed while a few people enrich themselves at the expense of everyone else.”
As investigations continue, National Security has promised to maintain its presence at the station “until sanity is restored,” vowing to prevent further abuse and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
