Muntaka under investigation for possessing gun

The Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly is investigating circumstances that led to the purchase of a pump action gun for the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka.

The previous administration of the assembly under the Mahama administration reportedly bought the weapon for the MP.

The immediate-past chief executive of the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly, Hamidan Nuredeen, was also said to have benefitted from the pump action gun gift from the assembly.

The two personalities, according to the Auditor General’s report, requested for the offensive weapons to be used for protection.

The two guns were registered in the names of Muntaka and Hamidan.

The current MCE for Asokore Mampong, Alidu Seidu, who made the disclosure, said Hamidan returned his weapon to the assembly two months ago, following a request.

Mr Alidu Seidu said he wondered why the former MCE decided to take the gun home – being a property of the assembly – after his tenure of office had ended.

He said, however, that Muntaka was yet to return his, noting that the assembly would soon take steps to invite the Asawase MP to establish if indeed the said gun was still in his possession.

Mr Seidu stated that if indeed the offensive weapon is still with the lawmaker, then the management of the assembly would decide if he should continue keeping it, saying, “I can’t act alone.”

According to the MCE, who is the head of the Municipal Security Council, he has a police bodyguard and therefore not interested in using the pump action gun for protection as his predecessor did.

Mr Alidu Seidu, who was speaking in an interview with DAILY GUIDE during the Asokore Mampong Assembly’s maiden Town Hall meeting on Wednesday, said the security situation in the area had improved.

He called for unflinching support by all and sundry so that he could bring to bear President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s vision of transforming the country on Asokore Mampong.
