Minister calls on human resource professionals to retain talents

Human resource professionals have been advised to device means to attract, retain and develop best talents within their organisations; Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, Greater Accra Regional Minister said in Accra on Monday.

In a speech read on his behalf at the maiden graduation ceremony of Logos Graduate School (LGS) where 150 students passed out, he called for the motivation of human resource personnel to stay at post.

Nii Agbo said “In order that we can stay ahead of competition and ensure that we supply quality human resource, priority should be placed on the development of our human resource.”

He therefore called for strong partnerships among training institutes, universities and employers to bridge the gap that exists in labour market.

Professor John Bright Kobla Aheto, Advisory Board Member of LGS, called for the roll out of societal-relevant and quality courses and programmes that would serve Ghanaians better.

He described quality education as a type that enables majority of students to meet their expectation at the minimum level of learning.

Prof. Aheto added that quality education engendered creative critical thinking and problem-solving skills that laid emphasis on application of knowledge to benefit the society.

He called for strategic planning in the educational sector for development.

Prof. Aheto expressed dissatisfaction that strategic planning was missing in the oil and gas sector. He said Ghana had waited for far too long to develop the oil and gas sector long after the discoveries of hydrocarbons were made for the very first time in the Saltpond basin in the 1970s.

Prof Aheto recalled when RR Amponsah, a Minister under the Busia government went to parliament with a sample of oil collected from one such successful exploratory, to make public exhibition of locally discovered oil.

He stressed that proactive measures needed to be implemented to derive optimal potentials from the sector.**
