Takoradi, June 29, GNA- Mr Philip Kwesi Nkrumah, Shama-Ahanta East Metropolitan Chief Executive, at the weekend said the metropolitan assembly was determined to raise the level of education in the area. He was speaking at 2002 and 2003 Metropolitan Best Teacher Awards ceremony in Takoradi.
Mr Nkrumah said the assembly is collaborating with the Metropolitan Education Directorate to put in place measures to raise the standard and quality of education in areas like Shama Sub-Metropolitan District Council.
He said the assembly is collaborating with the Sulfork University through the University of Cape Coast to undertake a comprehensive study of the causes of low standard of education in areas like Shama for necessary remedial action.
Mr Nkrumah said the metropolitan assembly is determined to play its part in ensuring the sustenance of the best teacher award scheme in the metropolis.
He urged stakeholders of education both at home and abroad, to come to the aid of the scheme by donating generously to it.
Nana Kwabena Osei-Nketiah, Metropolitan Director of Education, said the scheme, if properly administered, would generate among teachers the desire to “die a little” for the community and the country and aspire to live above reproach.
He said if the scheme is to make positive impact, then the awards must be attractive so that teachers would expend their efforts to be innovative.
Twenty-for teachers were presented with awards ranging from 20″ colour television, gas cookers and refrigerators.
Miss Anita Abena Ampofo of Korsah Complex JSS, Takoradi was adjudged the overall best teacher for 2003.
