Manhyia: Nobody can breakaway from Asanteman

Manhyia Palace – seat of the Asante Monarch – has responded to recent comments of an intended breakaway of Kumawu from the Asante kingdom, insisting, no stool can break ranks with Asanteman.

The Sanaahene of Otumfou Osei Tutu the II, Professor Nana Kwadwo Nyantakyi III, vehemently opposed any such act by any stool under the Asanteman Council when he spoke to Ultimate Breakfast Show host Prince Minkah Friday January 25, 2015.

The breakaway threat was first made by some factions in a raging Kumawu chieftaincy dispute.

Three disgruntled kingmakers of the Kumawu Traditional Area in the Ashanti Region, recently called the bluff of the Monarch, following their destoolment, which they described as arbitrary and without any effect.

Nana Akwasi Baffo II, Akwamuhene; Nana Sarfo Agyekum II, Aduanahene; and Nana Okyere Krapah, Akyempemhene said Otumfuo Osei Tutu had no customary right to de-stool any chief of Kumawu, since in their view, Asanteman is a confederate state.

The chiefs insist that the selection and installation of 47-year-old Dr Emmanuel Yaw Kantanka Sarfo-Asante as paramount chief of Kumawu fell short of due process and contravened established Asante customary practices and tradition.

Meanwhile Nana Kwadwo Nyantakyi III has said it will be impossible for any faction under the Asante monarchy to breakaway.

Otumfuo’s Sanaahene also blamed the seeming politics that has crept into Ghana’s chieftaincy institution for the recent breakaway threats by some traditional areas.
