Man shot dead for ‘disobeying orders’ during highway robbery

A man, said to be 45 years old, was Monday dawn shot dead during an alleged highway robbery at Yikurugu, a suburb of Zebilla in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region.

Zougmore Sulleymane, was said to have been shot by the robbers when he refused an order to surrender his belongings during the robbery attack on the 207 Mercedes Benz bus they were travelling on.

The incident happened at about 3:30am on the newly diverted Bolgatanga – Pulmakom highway. He was shot in the leg, the Police in the area said.

The Police say they have retrieved four empty AK47 riffle shells from the scene of the incident, and that efforts are being made to arrest the perpetrators of the crime.

An amount of GHC2,941 was found on the deceased, as well as a Burkinabe identity card bearing the name Zougmore Sulleymane.

Our correspondent reported that the Police arrived at the scene to find the deceased lying in a pool of blood, and he was rushed to the Zebilla Government Hospital but passed on.

His body has since been transferred to Bolgatanga Regional Hospital.

Neighbours were said to have rushed to the area of the incident upon hearing gunshots only to find the man lying in blood and groaning in pain.

They called in the Police who came to take him to the hospital where he died.

The Police say they will from now be escorting buses from Zebilla to Bawku from 7:00pm to daybreak each day.
