Man jailed 10 years over hard drugs

A man caught with cannabis, weighing 64.41 grams was on Friday sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by the Juaso Circuit Court, presided over by Mr Fredrick Tetteh.

Baba Ali, 60 –year-old coconut seller, pleaded not guilty to the charge of illegal possession.

He was arrested on May 5, last year, at Pra-River, a farming community in the Asante-Akim South District, by the community’s neighbourhood watch committee.

Police Inspector Manasseh Obimpe said members of the committee were on routine patrol when they spotted the convict and five others cutting papers and using them to wrap the dried leaves along the banks of the River.

He said the others managed to slip through but Ali was seized together with the stuff and handed over to the police.

Samples of the leaves were later sent for forensic laboratory examination and it proved to be cannabis.
