Man, 63, to die for murdering his two children

Cape Coast, July 30, GNA – A High Court in Cape Coast presided over by Alhaji Mohammed Ahmed Mustapha, on Thursday sentenced Kwesi Nkrumah, a 60-year old unemployed to death for murdering his two children.

Nkrumah, who had pleaded not guilty to the charge of murder, was found guilty by a seven-member jury.

The Assistant State Attorney, Mr. Vincent Nyinaku, Prosecuting, told the court that Nkrumah had two children with his wife, Madam Ekua Atta and they all lived at Mankessim in the Mfantseman Municipality.

He said Nkrumah later developed the habit of drinking heavily and picked quarrels with the wife anytime he was drunk.

Mr Nyinaku said in January 2004, Nkrumah quarrelled with his wife again and she threatened to divorce him if he continued with his drinking habit.

He said the following day Madam Atta went to the market and left the two children in the care of their father (Nkrumah) but on her return found the house empty and all efforts to trace them proved futile.

She made a report to the police.

Mr. Nyinaku said on February 20, 2004 the body of a girl was found floating in the river Okyi at Mankessim and the police retrieved the body which had multiple marks of violence.

The body was later identified as Adwoa Tawiah the female daughter of the couple.

He said on March 10, 2004 skeletal remains of their son Kwame Abban was also found hanging on a tree in a bush, about 50 yards from where the body of the girl was found.

Nkrumah was arrested from his hide out on March 20 2004, upon a tip off.
