President John Dramani Mahama has inspected the Bechem Meat Processing Factory in Ghana’s Ahafo Region, with the facility expected to begin operations by the end of the first quarter of 2027.
The factory will have two production lines dedicated to broilers and layers, with the capacity to process 6,000 birds every hour. It is being developed alongside a feed mill to strengthen Ghana’s poultry value chain and create greater opportunities for local farmers and markets.
The project is part of the government’s #NkokoNketenkete programme, which has helped increase domestic poultry production from 4.6% to 22% as of May 2026.
President Mahama’s visit to the factory formed part of his #ResettingGhana tour of the Ahafo Region. During the tour, he also inspected two newly constructed Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds in the farming communities of Ahyiaem and Nsuapemkrom, within the Tano North Municipality.
Both health facilities have been supplied with medical equipment and other essential items, and include residential accommodation for staff.
Speaking during brief durbars held in the two communities, President Mahama said the CHPS compounds were part of a wider government plan to improve access to healthcare across the country.
“These were built from proceeds of the District Assemblies Common Fund. As a policy, I have directed all MMDCEs to construct two CHPS compounds, two classroom blocks, and a 24-hour economy market. These projects will be distributed across different communities within their respective districts,” he noted.
The president said the developments had been made possible by his administration’s decision to uncap the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF). Under the policy, 80% of the fund is distributed directly to Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), rather than being centralised in Accra.
He also told residents that patients attending the newly built CHPS compounds would receive free treatment through the Free Primary Healthcare Programme.
At the inspection in Ahyiaem, the Dormaahemaa, Odeneho Dr Akosua Fima Dwaben II, expressed her appreciation to President Mahama for bringing important development projects to the community.
The president was accompanied by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga; the Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare; the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku; and the Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
The delegation also included Regional Minister Charity Gardner, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the area, Regional and District Directors of Health Services, and local healthcare workers.
