President John Dramani Mahama has announced a bold infrastructure initiative to construct modern sports stadiums in Ghana’s six newly created regions, as well as in other underserved areas across the country.
The announcement forms part of his broader vision to improve sports development and access to world-class facilities for all Ghanaians, not just those in major cities.
According to the President, the proposed stadiums will be fully-roofed, mirroring the design of the Tamale Sports Stadium, a feature that not only enhances spectator comfort but also protects facilities from harsh weather, ensuring year-round usability.
The targeted regions include Oti, Bono East, Ahafo, Western North, Savannah, and North East. Many of these areas have long lacked dedicated sports infrastructure, limiting their participation in national and regional competitions.
Stakeholders in Ghana’s sporting community have welcomed the move, calling it long overdue. For years, athletes and coaches in remote areas have trained on bare fields and makeshift pitches, often losing out on opportunities due to inadequate facilities.
While timelines and specific funding mechanisms are yet to be fully detailed, the announcement has reignited excitement about the future of sports development in Ghana, and raised hopes that national talent will no longer be limited by geography.
