Law background will be a plus for new EC boss – Amaliba

Lawyer and member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Abraham Amaliba has stated that Mrs Charlotte Osei‘s background in law will be a huge plus in her new role as Electoral Commissioner.

According to him, being a lawyer is very good for her new position because, most electoral issues are created and grounded in law, hence her qualification as a lawyer would make her work and that of the commission much easier.

On claims that the newly appointment commissioner was sympathetic to the ruling NDC, Amaliba contended that “her association with NDC is remote.” The law lecturer also discounted ‘fears’ about where her loyalties were likely to fall.

“She cannot be found doing things contrary to the law, the law is going to regulate her activities,” he added. He is quick to point out that Charlotte with her work at the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) “is not entirely new to the EC’s processes.”

The new chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) replaces Dr. Kwadwo Afari Djan, who retired from the post after organizing six general elections that saw the ruling NDC win four times and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) wining it twice on the candidature of John Agyekum Kufuor.

Lawyer Amaliba was speaking on Starr FM, an Accra-based radio station.
