Kwaebibirem Assembly foots child’s operation bill

Kade, Nov. 22, GNA – Kwaebibirem District Assembly has gone to the aid of 23-month-old Michael Awuah of Kade, who is scheduled to undergo a major operation to reconstruct his esophagus at the National Cardiothoracic Centre in Accra.

(Esophagus is part of the throat leading from the mouth to the stomach).

The Assembly issued a cheque of 7.5 million cedis to offset the cost for the operation, when the Centre made an appeal to the Kwaebibirem District Assembly for assistance.

The Assembly instantly went to the rescue and sent a cheque to cover the cost of the operation, care and boarding.

In an interview, the Kwaebibirem District Chief Executive, Mr Yaw Yiadom-Boakye, said when he received the letter, signed by Dr Lawrence Sereboe, a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, he felt it was vital to save the life of the little boy without delay.

He said he considered that, such form of assistance was part of the poverty alleviation system, since the parents could not afford to foot the medical bill, adding that, the assembly had assisted in similar situations before.

The father of Michael, Mr Isaac Awuah, a mechanic, said, since the boy fell sick in February, this year, he had spent about nine million cedis on his medical bills by selling some personal belongings to be able to do so.

He said he could just not afford the cost of the major operation and expressed his deepest appreciation to the Assembly for its “wonderful and timely assistance”.

Mr Awuah said Michael was now being prepared for the operation.
