The Komenda-Edna-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) wing of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) on Thursday expressed concern about the alarming spate of violence and lawlessness that is steadily creeping into the nation’s political culture.
It has stated that, since the inception of the Fourth Republic, Ghana has recorded an unprecedented record of smooth transition from one government to another and wonders if the story would be same for this election year.
The concern was raised in a press release issued by the KEEA-PPP Director of Communications, Mr Asare Bediako, and Mr Badu Tenteh, a party member, in Cape Coast.
The release recalled that, in 2000, the NPP Government under ex President John Agyekum Kufuor took over the reins of government from former President Jerry John Rawlings and handed over in 2008 to President John Atta Mills, peacefully.
It said going by these precedents, it should have been safe to assume that the country was steadily maturing into a more democratic nation, but the violence and tension that has come to characterise the on-going Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) gives real cause for alarm.
The release stated that, the rate at which the BVR was degenerating into bizarre levels was so horrible that “our capacity to live in harmony as one people with one common destiny is hugely threatened”.
It cited incidents of violence that occurred among other places including Kumasi-Ashanti Region where lives were lost, Tain–Brong- Ahafo Region where people sustained various degrees of injuries as well as Odododiodo in the Greater Accra Region, “the melting point of all chaos and misery” and finally Oman FM.
It warned that, if urgent measures are not adopted to stem the unfortunate trends, worst incidents could befall the nation.
The release concluded by calling on the President to use his authority to enforce law and order since Ghanaians are looking up to him for their safety and peace.**
