Juvenile offenders to write this year’s BECE

Two juveniles from the Essipon Juveniles Correctional Home in the Sekondi/Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region are to write this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The two were rescued from the Sekondi Prisons by care officers of the Correctional Home two years ago and were enrolled at the centre’s basic school which is in need of support.

Mr Samuel Ackom, Headmaster of the Home told Ghana News Agency during a visit to the school that, “But for the timely intervention of the officers, the juveniles will be in prison custody with adult offenders”.

He has therefore called on the law enforcement agencies not to neglect the concept of juveniles’ correctional homes in dispensing justice so as not to ruin the future of young offenders.

The home, built under Social Welfare 48 years ago, has not seen renovation works.

This according to the headmaster does not provide the inmates as well as instructors the security needed for a facility such as the correctional institution and to enhance effective teaching and learning.
