Accra, Sept. 22, GNA – The Government of Japan on Monday provided an amount of 120,760 dollars (Over One Billion Cedis) to two institutions – the Dedukope Unit Committee and the Akrokerri Teacher Training College – to carry out various infrastructure development in the education sector.
The grant comes under Japan’s Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project.
An agreement to that effect was signed between Mrs Kazuko Asai, Japan’s Ambassador to Ghana and the representatives of the beneficiary institutions in Accra.
Under the contract Dedukope Unit Committee in the North Tongu District, which received 63,783 dollars would use the money to construct a block of six classrooms with an office, a store a library and a KVIP sanitation facility for the Dedukope Local Authority Primary School. Over 450 pupils and teachers are expected to benefit from the project that would improve the present deplorable learning and teaching environment in the school.
The Akrokerri Teacher Training College Practice School, which received 56,977 dollars, would also construct a block of six classrooms with a head teacher’s office, a store, a staff common room, a library and a 10-seater KVIP for the school.
Mrs Asai congratulated the beneficiary institutions and tasked them to make judicious use of the resources to complete the projects on time. She expressed the hope that the two projects would go a long way to create a favourable environment for effective teaching and learning in the schools.
Mr Samuel Dumashie, Assembly Member in the North Tongu District, who initialled the contract for Dedukope said the completion of the project would mark the beginning of a fruitful relationship between the people of that remote community and Japan.
Mr J. K. Asare, Principal of Akrokerri Training College, said the new school building would cater for the high rate of enrolment recorded in the area in recent times and also save poor parents from paying exorbitant fees to get their children into private schools. Besides students of the Training College would benefit from demonstration lessons which would equip them to become more competent teachers.
