Mali head coach Tom Saintfiet has expressed his disbelief at Ghana’s absence from the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), calling it “shocking” given the country’s footballing pedigree and the quality of its players.
Ghana failed to qualify for the continental tournament for the first time in over two decades, a stunning turn of events that has sparked concern across African football. The Black Stars, who have historically been one of Africa’s strongest teams, last missed out on AFCON in 2004.
Saintfiet, who will lead Mali against Ghana in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday evening, said he still holds the Ghanaian team in high regard despite their recent setbacks.
“It will be a very tough task. I have huge respect for the Ghanaian team,” he told reporters ahead of the match. “I really believe they have everything. It’s shocking that they won’t play AFCON. A country like Ghana must become African champion in the near future with all this quality.”
Saintfiet’s Mali side heads into Monday’s clash with growing confidence after a dominant 3-0 victory over Comoros. Ghana, in contrast, played out a frustrating 1-1 draw against Chad, continuing a troubling run of form.
Under head coach Otto Addo, Ghana failed to win a single qualifier in their AFCON campaign, drawing three and losing three, including defeats to Sudan and Niger.
Despite their recent disappointment, the spotlight remains firmly on the Black Stars as they look to bounce back in front of their home fans. The World Cup qualifier kicks off at 19:00 GMT at the Accra Sports Stadium, with both teams eager to make a statement.
