Insurgency groups are threat to Ghana – Lecturer

Alhaji Abubakar Mohammed Marzuq Azindoo, Lecturer, University of Applied Management, says the recent reports of Ghanaians joining Muslim insurgency groups such as ISIS, calls for the maintenance of the country’s enviable record of peace.

He said even though Ghana remains a model of peaceful co-existence and religious tolerance in the world, there is the need to ensure security, harmony, tolerance and unity.

Alhaji Azindoo said this in a lecture at the Muslim Youth Leadership Forum organised by the Islamic Peace and Security Council of Ghana (IPASEC) in collaboration with the Tijaniya Muslims of Ghana, in Accra.

Delivering a paper on the topic: “Education And Religion: Keys To Peace And Civilization,” Alhaji Azindoo, said threats to global peace and stability of contemporary society constitute a source of concern to governments and nations.

He said threat to global peace is not only by the actions of the armed terrorists but also by provocation.

Alhaji Azindoo therefore advised governments, institutions, and individuals to refrain from hiding behind semantics to justify provocative publications and outright campaign of calumny against any religion.

Alhaji Khuzaima Mohammed Osman, General Secretary of IPASEC, asked Muslim women, especially the younger ones, to take their education seriously and resist any forced or early marriages.

He said, as a way of curbing such practices in the Islamic communities, the Council would be liaising with Islamic scholars and the Imams to continue to preach against it.

Alhaji Osman said forcing young women into marriages is un-Islamic and it is imperative that parents desist from such acts.

“It is not Islamic practice to force young women into marriages and it is important the Muslim woman is supported to be able further her education,” he said.
