Ranking member on Parliament’s Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini has welcomed calls by civil society organisations for a transparent process to be used in appointing the special prosecutor.
According to him, there is the need to protect the Special Prosecutor from political influence.
As parliament debates the Office of the Special Prosecutor bill, the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations is urging the House to seriously consider its proposal.
The Coalition which includes the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), Centre for Democratic Development-Ghana (CDD Ghana) and the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC), wants the appointment process of the Special Prosecutor to be open and competitive.
They also want an ad-hoc committee constituted to scrutinise applicants for consideration as against the current provision in the bill which mandates the Attorney General to appoint the Special Prosecutor in consultation with the President.
Mr Fuseini told Class News on Monday, 6 November that: “These were the same points that I raised when I was making my submission on the floor of parliament. Insulate the special prosecutor from any political manipulation within the contest of article 58 (3).”
