Information Services campaigns for cleanliness

The Information Services Department (ISD) has embarked on a nationwide mobile van public education to sensitize the public on the need to keep their environment clean to avoid unnecessary diseases and deaths.

Mr Adoninyi Elvis, Acting Director of ISD, said the 15-day exercise which is in connection with the recent cholera outbreak in some parts of Accra was also to intensify the Department’s sanitation drive to create awareness on the need to adopt best hygienic practices in their daily activities.

He said the exercise first began in Accra and would take off in the other nine regions of the country from September 19 in English, Twi, Hausa and Ga, adding that it is also expected that Ghanaians would learn some lessons and change their attitudes towards littering the environment with refuse.

Mr George Opata, one of the ISD commentators, said the team would go round the market and residential areas spreading the message and also interacting with the people.

Some of the areas the team visited included Dome market, Madina, Kaneshie and Adenta.

At Madina, Francis Agbeko, a sales boy, said sometimes officials from the Municipal Assembly engage the traders in clean up exercises.

At Dome, market women listened keenly to the messages and told the GNA that they were aware of the cholera outbreak and always tried to keep the surroundings clean.

Mrs Esther Amenu, a dress maker, said there was the need for government to build a market in the area because presently individuals put up wooden structures which were not strong.
