I’ll solve Fulani problem – Akufo-Addo

A future Akufo-Addo government will learn from the Brazilian experience in tackling the recurrent Fulani problem in Ghana, three-time flagbearer of the biggest opposition party has promised.

Nana Akufo-Addo stated that Brazil, with a population of some 200 million people, has a cattle population of some 213 million. “This, however, has not brought the kinds of problems we are facing here in Ghana,” the opposition leader said.

“Brazil has put in place policies and measures to ensure that the animals are ranched and, therefore, do not ‘mingle’ with the human populace. These are the kinds of policies we will put in place if we win the election to ensure this Fulani menace is curbed, once and for all,” he added during his campaign in Drobonso, in the Sekyere Afram Plains Constituency of the Ashanti Region, on Saturday, March 26.

The constituency is one of the worst affected by the activities of Fulani herdsmen whose cattle destroy farmlands of locals. The nomadic herders are also accused of raping and maiming the locals.

About a month ago, the chief and people of Agogo, also in the Ashanti region, where most of the nomads graze their cattle, ordered the herders out of the area with their animals. A similar operation was undertaken in the Eastern region against the Fulani.

Also recently, the Ghana Armed Forces barricaded the Ghana-Mandari border in the Northern region to hold off scores of Fulani herdsmen, their families, and cattle from entering Ghana. They were fleeing violence from local farmers around Bounna in Ivory Coast.

The armed military have taken over portions of the Black Volta River and the Mandari Nsunua community in the Bole district.
