Ho Central Prison, on Monday inaugurated non-formal education classes to help illiterate inmates of the prison to learn how to read and write.
Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP) Emma Sawyer-Laryea, in charge of Ghana Prison Service in the Volta Region, said literacy should enable beneficiaries “deal with challenges” after serving their jail terms.
She expressed worry that some prisoners could not append signatures to their names, and gave the assurance that many of them would go home with certificate in non-formal education.
Mr Seth Anku, Ho Municipal Director of Non-Formal Division of the Ghana Education Service, said the beneficiary prisoners should be able to read and write within 21 months.
He said the beneficiaries would also learn trade and vocation, adding that the incarceration of inmates was not the end of their world, advising them to take advantage of opportunities in prison to harness their potentials.
The Ho Central Prisons is already running National Vocational Training Institute and Information and Communication Technology courses for interested inmates.**
