Hire technocrats to manage NHIS – former MP

The Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Adentan has called on government to depoliticise the operations of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

His call comes on the back of the Health Minister, Sherry Ayittey’s expected appearance before the Health Committee of Parliament to, among other issues, explain the reason for the poor handling of claims for mission hospitals with the debt currently standing at 50 million Ghana cedis.

Kwadwo Adu Asare who was speaking on Multi TV’s AM Show said the managers of the scheme have always been reactionary in solving the problems that affect the scheme.

He is thus calling on the Mahama administration to hire technocrats to handle the management of the health scheme.

Communications Director of the CPP, Nii Armah Akomfrah, described the managers of the health insurance scheme as ‘fire fighters’.

He called on government to take a second look at the scheme and decide whether to revamp the scheme and assure proper management or scrap the system and bring on board a health system that will work best for the country.

Mr. Akomfrah also described the current state of the scheme as one that is in crisis and called for pragmatic and drastic measures to be taken before the scheme gets out of hand.
