Head of Anglican Church to visit Ghana

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby Head of the Anglican Communion and his spouse Mrs Welby, would pay a three- day visit to Ghana, spanning Wednesday, October 29 to Friday, October 31.

The visit would be his first to West Africa, since his enthronement as head of the church in 2012.

Archbishop Welby and his entourage would be met at Kotoka International Airport by Right Reverend Dr Daniel Sylvanus Mensah Torto, Anglican Bishop of Accra and Mr Jon Benjamin, British High Commissioner.

On Thursday October 30, he would arrive in Kumasi where he would be met by Most Reverend Dr Daniel Yinka Sarfo, Archbishop of Internal Province of Ghana, Bishop of Kumasi and Primate of the Church of the Province of West Africa.

He would meet with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asante, who would host him to a lunch at the Manhyia Palace.

Archbishop Welby would attend a National Inter-faith Dialogue Conference at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and later have a media encounter.

Before his departure on August 31 to the UK, he would meet with Vice President Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur at the Flagstaff House, Kanda and Dr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuye, Accra Metropolitan Chief Executive, where he would receive the keys to Accra.

Bishop Torto said the visit of the Archbishop of Canterbury is very significant since his meeting with the Primate would centre on issues affecting the Anglican Communion.

He said the visit is a prelude to the Lambeth Conference in the UK, this year, which is a meeting of bishops/archbishops and their spouses.

Bishop Torto said the meeting held every 10 years would deliberate on issues bothering the Anglican Communion.
