Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has rejected claims by New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia that Ghana’s Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme is facing significant difficulties.
Mr Iddrisu said the programme had made notable progress under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government, which he said was providing the resources and support needed to maintain the policy.
He suggested that Dr Bawumia, a former Vice-President, may have received inaccurate information about the current situation. The Education Minister called on him to review his comments, particularly those concerning student feeding arrangements and other assistance provided through Free SHS.
“The Free SHS programme continues to receive the necessary support from government, and claims that it is facing challenges do not reflect the current situation. Dr Bawumia may have been misinformed about what is happening on the ground,” he said.
Mr Iddrisu also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring that students enrolled in the programme receive the support required to complete their education.
